Where are we?
Where are we?
Where are we from?
Where do we belong?
I happened upon the concept of "geo-identity" a few years ago, and it really resonated with me. The idea of place, or even more intimately, home, is deeply held. For me, I have come to realize that I feel most at home here in the East Bay. The geography speaks to me, with all its characteristic vocabulary (hills, seasons, climate, the Bay, the marine layer…).
Images evoke an association of place. The featured image for this post of the bridge triggers a sense of place for me, and of tremendous awe. Not only for the design and construction of this great span — imagine the workers’ stories — but for how the bridge itself connects us with the places and people at each end, for what it makes possible. And this evokes an awareness of the geography which reminds me of where I'm from, and where we are. Now.
It's all much bigger than my own imagination, and yet together in community we steward our home. "Home is where the heart is" goes the age-old aphorism. The heart is drawn toward those who you love. That's family. That's community.
Loving is why we're here - no more, no less.
We're here because we love.
That's awesome.
